One of Samba’s characteristics is its bouncing actions; however, its bounce is not vertical – we don’t jump up and down to create samba bounce. Rather, its bounce mostly comes from knees and feet. In addition, a dancer’s hip action paired with lower abdominal contraction and release will create very unique body actions. We also need to make sure that our upper body to be held steady while the lower body (hips and legs) is doing all the bouncing actions. I was really struck about this when I was watching a video clips of Slavik Kryklyvyy and Elena Khvrova’s samba show dance from one of the World Superstars Dance Festival. Their hips and legs were moving like crazy but their upper bodies were rather still… especially their heads… their eyes were locked at each other. It was beautiful. In this post, I’d like to share some video clips.

Here’s an overview of samba rhythms.
