Dancing with the Stars: Week 6
filed in TV on Apr.14, 2009
Another week of Dancing with the Stars went by, and Steve O was the one who had to go home. I expected that. I’m glad that Ty, even though he was the bottom two this week, survived. Indeed, Ty’s jive was stiff. But he’s not the only one who’s struggling with jive. I’m finding it difficult to show the bounciness of jive. It’s not just the bounce of jive, but also the energy of jive. It’s hard to do energetic and bouncy jive. If I try to be energetic, I tend to get stiff. When I try to be boundy, I get too stiff. So, all in all, you did a good job, Ty. It’s not something you can pick up in a few weeks. He seems to be sincere on TV, and I like that. He is also manly in a subdued way, unlike Giles. Giles to me is a bit over top in terms of manliness, but it’s all personal preference. At this point, I can see, Melissa, Giles, Shawn, and Lil’ Kim as a potential winner of the seaon but I hesitate to speculate who the ultimate winner will be.

Melissa’s rumba was good but seeing her doing her routine really made me realize how difficult the rumba is. See, the rumba was my favorite dance when I started because it is slow and the pattern seems to be easy. It still is, but now I know how hard it is to show all the delicate movements in rumba. For a beginner, it’s an easy dance, especially if it’s American. It is a box step with Quick, Quick, Slow. Its hip movement was tricky at first but after a few days’ intense practice, I thought I got it. Nah! Nada! Niet! Its hip movement is much more than moving hips side to side. There’s a vertical aspect as well as a horizontal aspect. Anyways, Melissa was doing steps and choregraphy right, but the delicacy of the rumba was not there. For a complete newbie, though, she did an excellent job.
The more I learn about dancing, the more I learn about its depth, and watching DWTS really makes me realize that. My eyes are much better now than 4 or 5 years ago when I didn’t dance at all. I’d have thought all the celbrities were doing a fantastic job on TV if I didn’t know how to dance. Now that I know a little about ballroom dancing, I can see flaws. However, it’s not celebrities fault. Dancing is a never-ending pursuit of perfection.
